What is the DPDP Act?
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is India's landmark data privacy law. It governs how businesses collect, store, and process personal data of Indian residents. Full enforcement begins May 2027, with penalties up to ₹250 crores for non-compliance.
Does the DPDP Act apply to my business?
If your business collects or processes any digital personal data of individuals in India — such as customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, health records, or any other identifiable information — the DPDP Act very likely applies to you. This includes businesses of all sizes, from startups to large enterprises.
My business is small. Do I still need to comply?
Yes. The DPDP Act does not have an explicit exemption for small businesses. Any organisation processing digital personal data of Indian residents has compliance obligations regardless of size. DPDPOne is specifically designed to make compliance affordable and achievable for businesses of all sizes.
What happens if I don't comply by May 2027?
Non-compliance can result in financial penalties up to ₹250 crores, enforcement action by the Data Protection Board of India, and significant reputational damage. The Data Protection Board has the authority to investigate complaints and impose penalties on non-compliant organisations.
